摘要

According to the National Highway TrafficSafety Administration (NHTSA), 5,376 pedestrians werekilled and approximately 70,000 were injured in 2015 in theUS. Seventy-four percent of all pedestrian fatalities occurredin low illumination nighttime conditions, which is a twopercent increase from the previous year (NHTSA, 2017;NHTSA, 2015). Pedestrians can wear visibility aids such asretroreflective material to increase their own conspicuity todrivers at night. The conspicuity benefit is maximal when theretroreflective material is strategically positioned to highlightthe pedestrians’ “biological motion” (e.g., Wood, Tyrrell, &Carberry, 2005).
