Textiles are important components in many biomedical devices, including sutures,rnhernia mesh, vascular grafts, composite fracture fixation rods, screws, plates, hiprnstems, knees, and, most recently, fibrous tissue engineering scaffolds. Fibers andrnfilaments provide unlimited potential and may be processed to interact with tissue andrncells in very specific, desirable manners. Recent advances in conductive fibers havernadded a new realm of possibilities since they may be manipulated to achieve specificrnbiological responses. Absorbable textiles are key to providing temporary devices that dornnot remain long-term in the body, thus avoiding a potential need for surgical removal.rnOur research focuses on the development of absorbable plastics for use in a variety ofrnbiomedical tissue engineering applications.
