Evolving risks and use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) components

As we continue to defend our nations, the increased use of Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS)rntechnology in military, infrastructure and other systems necessitates different approaches tornaddress evolving risks and opportunities. COTS technologies have become far more capablernover the last 10 years and that trend shows no sign of slowing. In fact, the commercial world isrnoften on the cutting edge as companies vie to win market share. Nations and customers havernrecognized this trend and, with a desire to capitalize on it (cost and time), are now oftenrnspecifying “maximum use of COTS” in many systems. This increasing specification and use ofrnCOTS technology will increase the challenges in protecting our nations, as well as afford us newrnopportunities for exploitation and defense.
