Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) is one of the largest transmission utilities in the world. It owns and operates upwards of 58,000 circuit kms of transmission lines of voltages ranging from 66kV to 765kV AC (765 kV system in operation at 400 kV) and ± 500kV HVDC & 105 substations with transformation capacity of approximately 61,000 MVA. It consistently maintains transmission system availability over 99%.rnMaintaining such a huge network split into seven (7) Regions with its transmission lines, sub-stations and associated systems is a mammoth task especially when there are pressures from the Regulators to maintain a high availability and low number of tripping per line. The planning for maintenance, inventory, manpower, spares etc. requires a great co-ordination amongst various maintenance offices (more than 250 in number) which sometimes acts as an impediment to the smooth flow of the process. In this direction, a system has been designed which is available online across entire network of POWERGRID using Share Point Portal technology and is loaded with all details of the transmission system which can be extracted at any node on real time basis.rnThis system has initial parameters of all the assets including factory/ pre-commissioning, periodic maintenance activity results. When fully commissioned, it will provide an insight into equipment diagnostics by maintaining the signatures of each and every equipment (e.g. transformers- 268 nos., reactors-286 nos, circuit breakers-1597 etc to name a few). It will help in life cycle costing as purchase decisions regarding make and type of equipment to be chosen can be made based on analytical decisions depending on the performance of the equipment. Amongst other things, it will aid in movement of inventory within and across regions with great ease as there is transparency involved and the information set is available to all. This will result in bringing down the inventory holding cost which is a major component of O&M expenditure.
