Voltage instability problem restricts power transfer from the remote generating stations to load centers in Seoul metropolitan area and will be increasingly growing due to the concentration of electricity demand in that area in Korea. This paper presents a feasibility study of reviewing and evaluating FACTS applications to the power system to improve performance of the power system in Seoul metropolitan area from the aspect of voltage stability which may cause wide area blackout when subjected to severe contingency under the critical operating conditions. The contents of this paper are composed of the selection of installation location, the study of effectiveness, and the economic analysis of FACTS options. The candidate sites for FACTS device to enhance voltage stability of the power system in Seoul metropolitan area were examined through modal analysis which is provided in VSAT. The type and capacity of FACTS device was selected in consideration of site availability, requirement for dynamic VAR support, and technology development. Economic analysis was carried out based on the criteria which increase power flow over the transmission lines constrained by voltage stability and cost saving which results from generation re-dispatch for the cases of FACTS applications.
