A series of 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(4'-X-benzyl) phenols was prepared,analogous to the comound Jurd 2644(X=OCH_3) to investigate a possible Hammett relationship between hte 4'-substituent and the chemostreilant activity of the compounds in adult Musca domestica.Fourteen compounds of this typoe were prepared.12 of them new.Jurd 2419 (X=H) was found to be as active in our bioassay as J2644,as were four new compounds (X=N(NH_3)))2,CH_3,SCH_3,Cl).Allprevented successful reporduction when administered at 30 mg/kg of diet.there was no appoarent corelation betwene Hammettt and activity.Active compouns all had msmall substituents and molecular weight sbelow 350.The activity seeemed to be detemrined by the bulk of X rather than by its electronic properties.
