The effect of modifiers on the Structure and properties of starch/SBR composites

Starch/SBR composites were prepared by mixing rubber latex with starch paste and then co-coagulating them together, and the effect of two coupling agents Bis-(γ-triethoxysilylpropyl)-tetrasulphide (Si-69), 3-aminophopyltrie-thoxysilane (KH-550) and Resor-cinol-Formaldebyde (RF) on structure and properties of Starch/SBR composites was investigated. All of the three modifiers reduced the scorch time of the compounds, especially KH-550. RPA of the compounds and observation of Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) of starch/SBR composites showed that the two coupling agents and RF had little effect on dispersion of starch. SEM photographs and stress-strain curves showed that RF enhanced the interfacial adhesion between filler and rubber obviously. The combination of RF and KH-550 greatly improved the mechanical properties of starch/SBR composites, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and modulus.
