Abstract: A new infrared (IR) interferometric method has beendeveloped in conjunction with low-loss, flexibleoptical fibers, sensors, and probes. This combinationof fiber optical sensors and Fourier Transform (FT)spectrometers can be applied to many fields, including(1) noninvasive medical diagnostics of cancer and otherdifferent diseases in vivo, (2) minimally invasive bulkdiagnostics of tissue, (3) remote monitoring of tissue,chemical processes, and environment, (4) surfaceanalysis of polymers and other materials, (5)characterization of the quality of food,pharmacological products, cosmetics, paper, and otherwood-related products, as well as (6) agricultural,forensic, geological, mining, and archeological fieldmeasurements. In particular, our nondestructive, fast,compact, portable, remote and highly sensitivediagnostics tools are very promising for subsurfaceanalysis at the molecular level without samplepreparation. For example, this technique is ideal fordifferent types of soft porous foams, rough polymers,and rock surfaces. Such surfaces, as well as livingtissue, are very difficult to investigate bytraditional FTIR methods. We present here FEW-FTIRspectra of polymers, banana and grapefruit peels, andliving tissues detected directly at surfaces. Inaddition, results on the vibrational spectral analysisof normal and pathological skin tissue in the region of850 - 4000 cm$+$MIN@1$/ are discussed. !34
