In this paper, a novel shape optimization approach, the feature-recognition based optimization, is proposed to provide an efficient optimization solution of complex mechanical structures. The basic idea of the so-called "feature-recognition based optimization" comes from the thought of combining the following three techniques: 1. Feature-based design in CAD system 2. Feature recognition in the area of computer vision 3. Optimization with the purpose of achieving a fast and automatic shape optimization for arbitrary topological type of mechanical structures.
