Tracking the Progress of Occupational Health Awareness Among the Site Employees Through Questionnaire-Based Survey

This paper shares our experiences in reviewing occupationalrnhealth implementation progress through a questionnaire basedrnsurvey. Survey questionnaires were sent out to all siternlocations to gauge level of awareness on occupational healthrnamongst the workers. The purpose is to determine therneffectiveness of our Occupational Health Management Systemrnin raising their level of awareness. The first survey wasrnconducted in 1999 where the questionnaires were intentionallyrnfocused on basic understanding of occupational health. Wernhad about forty-six percent overall participation which isrnconsidered reasonable for a voluntary exercise. Using fiftyrnpercent score as reference level, about eighty-five percent ofrnthe respondent met the said level. As such, we concluded thatrnat least thirty-nine percent of our site workers had a good basicrnunderstanding of occupational health.rnSince the first survey in 1999, various efforts were carried outrnto further increase the level of awareness on occupationalrnhealth. These include an open communication workshop to allrnsite workers on specific health hazards at our work sites andrnhow to minimize their exposure, simplified packages onrncommon hazards for site safety meetings, and introduction ofrnthe various selection of respirators and monitoring equipment.rnTaking all these into account, after almost two years werndeveloped a similar yet different set of questionnaires, focusedrnon intermediate level of understanding. Using fifty percentrnscore as the reference level, the results showed about eightyfourrnpercent respondents met the said level. With only fortyfivernpercent participation, it can be concluded that aboutrnthirty-eight percent of our site workers had a goodrnintermediate level of understanding in occupational health. Inrna short period of less than two years, we were able to raiserntheir level of understanding from basic to intermediate throughrnthe various programs implemented.rnWe will also analyse the progress in various specificrnoccupational health subject amongst our site workers, such asrnin hazards awareness, procedures, respirators and use ofrnreferences and manuals. We hope with this exercise, we willrnbe able to identify our areas of strength and weakness andrndevelop our future occupational health implementationrnplan accordingly.
