The Snohvit LNG project includes offshore development inrnthe Barents Sea, pipelines to shore, remote operation of thernproduction, onshore LNG plant, and shipment of products.rnPlanning for the project has been going on for a decade, andrnthe Project Plan was delivered to Norwegian authorities inrnSeptember 2001.rnSn?hvit has been optimised using both environmental andrneconomic criteria. The project is unique in many respects. It isrnthe worlds’ northernmost LNG plant. It combines offshorernproduction, remote operation from shore, and onshorernprocessing with today’s best available technology. For thernlocal community Hammerfest region, an investment of 5rnbillion USD will have major effects. From an environmentalrnperspective the project is also unique. It is the first project inrnthe world where CO_2 separated from the produced gas onshorernare piped back offshore for re-injection to the ground. It isrnfurther the first development in the sensitive Barents Sea. ThernLNG plant is located in an area with important archaeologicalrnand cultural areas, near rich populations of natural resourcesrnand very active fisheries. Proper planning is therefore veryrnimportant to ensure an environmental acceptable development.
