Laser dissimilar welding experiments were carried out in order to study the growth competition of the stable δ and metastable γ phases in Fe-Ni alloys as a function of composition. Plane front and dendritic growth models were applied to calculate a solidification microstructure selection map for Fe-Ni peritectic alloys. Reasonable agreement was found between the theoretically and experimentally determined transition from δ→γ dendrites when the growth direction was from low to high N i concentration. In the opposite direction (γ→δ), due to nucleation effects, a systematic difference was observed.
