HOW TO GAIN ACCEPTANCE OF A CHANGE FROM WEEKLY TO BI-WEEKLY RECYCLING COLLECTIONS

The City of Piano's Environmental Waste Service Division has maintained a successful residential curbside recycling program since 1991 as one facet of its Integrated Municipal Solid Waste Management System. The residential recycling program has evolved through numerous enhancements including changes to routing and container sizes, sorting processes, acceptable materials and collection frequency (from weekly to the present bi-weekly level). In addition, the type of program has evolved from the initial curb sorting style to semi-automated, to full automation, and finally to the present automated single-stream style. During the program's twelve year progression, the collected recyclable materials have increased 214% (or 17.9% annually) from the initial 6,382 annual tons to last year's 20,056 annual tons which represents an overall 18% diversion from the total residential solid waste stream.
