Intercalation compounds of CdPS_3 with 4-[4-(dimethylamino)-#alpha#-styryl]-1-methylpyridine cation exhibit high-efficiency optical second harmonic generation. This is unexpected since the native CdPS_3 host crystallizes in a centrosymmetric lattice. It is believed that the SHG results from the aggregation of the interalate within the interlamellar spaces of the host lattice. For efficient SHG the spatial organization must ahve characteristic length scale on the order of the second harmonic wavelength, or about 1 micron. We have stuided the temperature dependence of the fluorescence of CdPS_3: DAMS intercalation compounds and have demonstrated the presence of DAMS aggregates.
