Since Direct Carbon Fuel Cell (DCFC) requires a molten electrolyte in order to facilitate ionic contact between solid carbon fuel and electrolyte, conductivity and stability studies concerning molten bismuth oxide (Bi_2O_3) has been thoroughly investigated. These studies reveal that Bi_2O_3 exhibits high ionic conductivities at temperatures higher than 700℃ and slight decrease in total conductivity under carbon dioxide environment. Also, to account for the instability under CO_2 environment Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis has been done. EDX analysis revealed an increase in carbon content by 50 percent per one mole of bismuth which can be attributed to possible carbonate formation.
