摘要

In the present paper the philosophy underlying the Des_Cartes finite-element package for the direct computation of (electro)magnetic fields is discussed. This package is based on the use of a new type of element, the generalised Cartesian finite element, that automatically cares for the modelling of the conditions at interfaces between different media and along the outer boundaries. The formulation of the finite-element method used is chosen such that it simultaneously minimises the error in the curl and the error in the divergence.
