Three dimensional observation by the μCT showed that all materials tested presented new bone formation, which filled the defect at both time points, whereas the negative control presented less bone formation with soft tissue invasion into the defects. Although the histomorphometric results corresponded to the μCT observation, i.e. comparable bone fill percentage, resulting in no statistical differences between all the bone substitute groups, the remodeling activity was notable for the experimental materials compared to the commercially available xenografts. Such specific feature of the developed bone substitute may be a potential alternative, since they seem to possess an excellent balance of degradability and osteoconduction.
