Biomaterial associated infection due to bacterial adhesion and biofilm build up is one of the main problems associated with the use of blood-contacting devices. Alternative to traditional addition of antibiotics, reduction of bacterial adhesion to an implant without the use of drug is an attractive method for reduction/prevention of infection. Our previous promising data have shown that submicron textured polyurethane biomaterial surfaces could largely reduce the adhesion of S. epidermidis and S. aureus as well as biofilm formation.
