There has been an increasing tendency to assess liquid metal quality using pressure filtration methods. Recently, with the introduction of derivative methods and the classification of three flow stages (i.e. initial transient, steady and terminal transient), some new insights into pressure filtration behavior of liquid aluminum alloys have been obtained. However, very little is known about the filtration behavior of this initial transient stage before the formation of a filter cake at the top surface of a filter medium. Clearly, this stage is important because it appears prior to the establishment of cake mode filtration and thereby it has significant influences on the structure and properties of the cake formed, the filtration behavior and the detection of liquid metal quality. This work discusses some fundamental occurring in this stage.
