In this paper, analytical heat flow solutions for friction stir welding are developed from conventional welding analyses. Consideration is given to characteristic timescales of heat flow, in order to simplify the representation of heat generation and conduction. Preliminary estimates of the peak temperature under the tool appear reasonable, and the predicted thermal cycles in the heat affected zone agree with experimental measurements from a friction stir weld in aluminium 2014-T6 alloy.
