SP Power Systems are responsible forrnmanaging the Transmission and Distributionrnnetworks covering central and southernrnScotland as well as the Manweb networkrncovering Cheshire, Merseyside and NorthrnWales. This includes the specification andrnapplication of protection, control andrncommunications systems for the LV system uprnto and including 400kV.rnModern protection and control equipment isrnable to offer more functionality in singlernequipment than traditional stand-alonerndevices. Advances in technology are forcingrnthe users of protection & control systems tornexamine their standards and policies for thernapplication of these systems. In addition thernhigh volumes of raw data produced by modernrnequipment must be rationalised and managedrnin a co-ordinated manner if users are to avoidrnspending more time gathering data than usingrnit.rnThis paper describes the considerations givenrnwhen developing new policies for thernapplication and management of modernrnprotection & control systems. It details thernarchitectures used for the Distribution &rnTransmission systems, the benefits, which havernbeen achieved through integration, andrndescribes a number of issues that werernaddressed during development. In addition arnnew data management system was developedrnwhich enables IED software applications to bernlocated on a central server unit combined withrna single data capture/distribution process.
