Water crisis, high wages as well as non- availability of labor during peak period of rice transplanting warrant shift from transplanting to some alternative method of rice planting for its sustainability. In the recent years, direct seeding of rice is being practiced in several parts of the world. However direct planted crop suffers from severe weed competition. An investigation was carried out in the major rice growing area of northern part of India to study the influence of different rice planting methods and control of weeds by chemical and cultural means on weeds dry matter accumulation and grain yield of basmati rice. The maximum weeds dry matter accumulation was observed under zero tillage (ZT) and minimum under transplanted rice (TP). However grain yield of rice was similar under both DS and TP but significantly higher than ZT method of sowing. The grain yield was significantly maximum under weed free conditions and significantly minimum under weedy check. The grain yield under both doses of pretilachlor (0.56 and 0.75 kg/ha) and 2 hand weedings (HWs) was similar but significantly lower than lower dose of pretilachlor integrated with one HW given at 35 days after sowing.
