How to Implement an Integrated Management System (IMS) in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SME)

This paper presents: a) a design of a new IMS concept conform to features of individual enterprises, specially of SME, b) employee participation measures to increase the acceptance of a management system and also to increase the long term success and c) results deducted from a case study of a small construction company in Germany. The IMS in the presented case study is built up in a process oriented way and considers the standards ISO 9001 (quality), ISO 14001 (environment) and SCC (occupational safety). The integration and coordination of the blue and white-collar employees as well as the CEO was managed with help from a reference model. Several measures to stimulate the employee participation are deployed e.g. vision workshop, CI-Circle, project group to record and frame the work processes. Although only a small case study is presented, the level of benefit of each measure as well as the gain of the generated IMS-concept can be identified particularly in the context of SME.
