This paper describes a part of a developed and practically validated method for indicators and displays (I&D) design and assessment. The method provides optimum conditions for information perception by operators and computerization of the I&D design process. It allows general ergonomic and engineering parameters of equipment and operating conditions to be taken into account. This method is based on the synthesis of light-engineering, informational, circuit-engineering and system-engineering research. This paper deals exclusively with the results of light-engineering studies. The concepts of optimum and permissible (by criterion of perception quality) ranges of I&D characteristics and operating conditions are introduced. The graph theory is shown to be applicable for optimization of I&D luminance-contrast characteristics. The calculations of light-forming layer parameters of indicators and filters are illustrated by examples.
