Structure and Properties of Ramie Fiber by Sodium Periodate Treatment

摘要

In this paper, the weight change, structure and mechanical properties of ramie fibers treated with sodium periodate under different processing conditions were investigated. Results show that active group of aldehyde appeared in FTIR spectra of oxidized ramie fiber. Both the weight and the crystalline of ramie samples decreased during treatment. The handle feeling of ramie fibers under deep oxidation became crisp and stiff. The breaking strength decreased with increasing concentration of oxidant and/or with pronging treatment time, as well as the breaking elongation.
