Development of a design code of practice for concrete water retaining structures (WRS) in SouthrnAfrica is currently underway, along with the revision of the code of practice for reinforced concrete structuresrn(SANS 10100). This paper discusses part of the research undertaken in the development of the proposed SouthrnAfrican design code for WRS, namely, the subject of model uncertainty. Cracking due to loads and/or restrainedrndeformations (such as shrinkage) under serviceability limit state (SLS) is usually the limiting condition for therndesign of water retaining structures. The basic crack model considered is that utilized by Eurocode EN1992-1-1rn(2004) and EN1992-3 (2006). A reliability model for load-induced cracking to EN1992 is formulated using thernFirst Order Reliability method and applied to typical South African WRS.The modelling and influence of modelrnuncertainty applied to the EN1992 crack model for load-induced cracking is investigated and discussed. It isrnfound that model uncertainty has a significant effect on the reliability model for cracking.
