Fabrication and properties of pressureless sintered TiB sub 2 containing metal and carbon as sintering aids were investigaed. The posders were blended in the required ratio nad wet-mixed in ethyl alcohol for 24 hours using a phastic ocntainer and nylon balls. After drying, the mixture was formed with a press under 30 MPa and was finally formed under CIP at 300 MPa. Pressureless sintering was conducted at 1673 to 2173 k for one hour in an argon atmoshpere. The microstructure of isntered TiB sub 2 containing Cr-C or Ni-C was found to retard the grain growth and fracture surface of the sintered body and showed both transgranular and interfranular fracture modes. The X-ray diffraction analysis detected metal boride and TiC phases in addition to TiB sub 2 in the sintered body.
