Novel chelating adsorbents were synthesized by chemical modification of chitosan with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid. Adsorption of various metal ions were examined from sulfuric acid solution and the selectivity of base metals was found to be as follows: Cu(II)>=Mo(VI)>Ni(II)>V(IV)Zn(II)>=CO(II)>Al(III). Breakthrough tests followed by elution tests using a column packed with these adsorbents demonstrated the successful mutual separation between nickel and cobalt as well as the recovery of small amounts of nickel and cobalt from a large excess of aluminium.
