The study area is located in the northern LimpopornProvince of South Africa. The aim of the study was tornidentify groundwater targets that could assist inrnimproving the quality of life of rural communities.rnAirborne magnetic data was interpreted in order tornidentify dykes, lineaments and magnetic sources thatrncould control on groundwater occurrences. The length,rnparallelism of magnetic lineaments in some parts of thernarea suggests emplacement under tensional stress fieldrnalong pre-existing zones of weakness. Lineamentsrnextracted from the airborne magnetic data and satelliternimagery data were superimposed on drainage lines inrnorder to investigate the relative importance of structuralrnfeatures controlling the distribution of surface water andrngroundwater. In addition, normalized differencernvegetation index was used in identify areas of vegetationrnbanding which enable inference of fracture zones andrnhigh moisture content in the soil. The study shows that thernnorthern and central eastern parts of the study area arernmore prospective for groundwater occurrence, while thernsouthern and southwestern parts of the project area arerndry with no surface manifestation of the of groundwater.rnIntegration of lineaments derived from aeromagnetic datarnand Landsat imagery as well with the normalizedrndifference vegetation index was able to identify areas withrna potential for groundwater occurrence at a regional scale.
