The genus pichia Hansen was introduced as the type species, pichia membranafaciens (Hansen) Hansen. Phaff maended the diagnosis of the genus pichia in 1956. Since the amendment, many species have been accommodated in the genus. In 1984, Kurtzman made an experiment for the nuclear DNA complementarity of the phenotpically similar homothallic species of the genera Hansenula Sydow et Sydow and pichia, and found a higher degree of DNA relatedness (75
