On the basis of the extensive collection of traffic accident statistic data of the world's first long-distance trunk highway that crosses the mobile desert -- the Taklimakan Desert since its construction, and in-depth field research work, this paper made in-depth analysis on the real situation, characteristics and causes of desert highway traffic safety. Study shows that, because of the abominable nature environment and special traffic condition along the road, traffic safety on the desert highway becomes a serious problem since its construction; the distribution of traffic accidents on the desert highway has its own characteristics, the number of traffic accidents is greater in spring and autumn than that in winter and, at noon, in the evening and at night is higher than the other day time; the number of traffic accident decreases from north to south along the Taklimakan desert highway, while the severity degree of those accidents increases from north to south.; the main environmental factors that affect traffic safety on the desert highway are high temperature and strong wind; human, mainly driver behavior is the absolutely main causes of traffic accidents on the desert highway ; the traffic environment of the desert highway often cause drivers break the traffic rules more readily, and over speed; trees planted along desert highway, may also affect safe driving if not carefully arranged; there is still a shortage of essential safety guarantee facilities and reaction mechanism on the desert highway. On the basis of analyzing the development change of main accidents indexes, GM(1,1)forecast model, that is suitable for accidents characteristics of desert highway, was established, and the future traffic accidents development trend was forecasted, by Fuzzy Cluster Analysis, this paper made evaluation on real situation of desert highway traffic safety. Finally, aiming to ensure the smoothness of road, safety of personnel and smooth passing of vehicles, this paper put up with the structure of desert highway operation security system.
