Fungicidal activity screening of 40 weeds against 5 phytopathogenic fungi

The increasing concern over environmental effects and food safety caused by organic synthetic fungicides has highlighted the need for alternative products. Fungicidal activity screening from plants could lead to the discovery of new agents for phytopathogenic fungi control. The present study was conducted to screen the fungicidal activity of acetone extracts from 40 weeds against Phytophthora capsici, Pythium aphanidermatum, Fusarium oxysporium, Fusarium solani and Bolrytis cinerea was screened in vitro. Fungitoxicity was calculated in terms of percent mycelial inhibition. The results indicated that extracts of 10 weeds significantly reduce colony growth of at least I phytopathogic fungi. Extracts of Artemisia annua, Xanthium sibiricum possessed over 60% inhibition rate against all the 5 phytopathogic fungi tested. And SaMa plebeian inhibited 4 phytopathogic fungi. Ecliptaprostrate was toxic to Phytophthora capsici, Pythium aphanidermatum and Fusarium oxysporium. Lagopsis supine and Rehmannia glutinosa were toxic to 2 phytopathogic fungi. Descurainia sophia, Rumex dentatus, Planlago asiatica, and Euphorbia helioscopia significantly inhibited mycelial growth of 1 phytopathogic fungi. The results indicate that further studies such as bioassay-directed fraction of active compounds were worthwhile to cany out.
