Ectomycorrhizal fungal community of Quercus liaotungensis in Dongling Mountain, Beijing

Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal composition was investigated in Quercus liaotungensis stands in Dongling Mountain of the Beijing Forest Ecosystem Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 117km west of Beijing (39°58'N, 115°26'E). Three plots (each plot 20m×30m), i. e., plot A (20 years old), plot B (60 years old), and plot C (100 years old), were selected from different ages of Q. liaotungensis stands. Ten plant individuals were arbitrarily selected and root systems of each plant were collected by tracing from trunk in each plot. The average 4 m-length of fine roots (<2mm diam.) were collected from each sample and the mean ECM colonization was 57% in plot A, 48.7% in plot B, and 52% in plot C. A total of 32 ECMs (ECM 1-32) were identified based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Of these ECM fungi 22 were Basidiomycetes, belonging to ten genera (Amanita, Clavulina, Cortinarius, Inocybe, Melanogaster, Naucoria, Russula, Scleroderma, Sebacina, and Tomentella) of nine families (Amanitaceae, Bolbitiaceae, Clavariaceae, Cortinariaceae, Hymenogastraceae, Russulaceae, Sclerodermataceae, Sebacinaceae, and Thelephoraceae). The other ten ECM fungi were Ascomycete origin, belonging to five genera (Cenococcum, Peziza, Tarzetta, Rhizoscyphus, and Tuber) of five families (Elaphomycetaceae, Helotiaceae, Pezizaceae, Pyronemataceae, and Tuberaceae). Seven EMs were identified to species level, twelve to generic level, and eleven to family level. In the 32 ECMs, 13 were obtained from plot A, 19 from plot B, and 18 from plot C. Cenococcum geophilum was the most frequently encountered ECM fungus, followed by Tomentella ramosissima in the three plots. There were lower Sorenson's coefficients (CS) of ECM fungal composition among the three plots (between A and B: 0.50, between A and C: 0.39, and between B and C: 0.43). The results suggest that the diversity and fungal composition of ECM fungi of Q. liaotungensis are affected by stand ages.
