Physical vapor deposition (PVD) techniques, such as sputtering and evaporation, are increasing in popularity as methods for tailoring surface properties for specific engineering applications. Some of htese applicatiosn include anti-corrosion coatings for turbine blades, hard coatings for machine tools, optical coatings, electronic circuitry, and high temperature superconductors. One of the attributes of the physical vapor deposition process is the ease with which a wide variety of graded, layered, and nonequilibrium coatings and alloys can be produced. Previous research, by several groups, has revealed that nonequilibrium Al alloy cotaings produced via physical vapor deposition exhibit high tensile strength, excellent thermal stability, and enhanced corrosion resistance.
