The flame-retardancy of PA6 was studied in presence of an efficient new type of organic phosphorus additives. Variously modified montmorillonites, such as non modified Na- montmorillonite, organophillic- and polymer intercalated organophillic montmorillonite, were also introduced for preventing the melt dripping. Surprisingly the most intense effect was found in case of the non modified type both in respect of reducing the melt dripping and enhancing the flame retardancy. Rheological, thermal and spectroscopic investigations indicate that additionally to a catalytic carbonisation effect of the montmorillonite some cross-linking like/gelation process also assists the positive impact. Chemical and physical interactions with montmorillonite retain the flame retardant additive in the solid phase improving its effectiveness this way.
