Corundum spinel castables have been successfully applied in the critical areas of steel ladle due to their excellent properties.With an increase in volume, steel-making temperature and dwelling time of steel ladle, the service environment of corundum spinel castables has become much more severe, which requires that the castables should possess superior properties and longer service life.Many papers have found that high temperature properties and stag resistance of the castables have been greatly influenced by the amount and grain size of MgAl2O4 spinel.Herein, influences of grain size of spinel on the properties of castables were studied.With decreasing in the grain size of spinel, cold strength of specimens after firing at 1100 ℃ and 1550 ℃ increases, and bulk density rises, apparent porosity and permanent linear change decrease.Hot strength, residual strength and retained elastic modulus ratio of specimens are markedly increased, indicating high strength and thermal shock resistance of castables are improved with the diminution of grain size of MgAl2O4 spinel.
