This paper describes the development and qualification of a newrnfamily of multi-fiber optical cables designed for routing andrnpatching in network applications such as local area networksrn(LAN’s), wide-area networks (WAN’s) and data centers.rnThese “micro fiber cables” are designed for routing in confinedrnspaces such as trays, in racks, and under raised floors, where theyrncan be subjected to tight bends. To reduce cable diameter andrnweight, bare (250μm) optical fibers are used in cable structuresrnthat have, until now, used tight-buffered fibers.rnMicro fiber cables (MFC’s) must be compatible withrncommercially available multi-fiber connectors, and must meetrnprevailing Industry Specifications for interconnect or backbonernoptical fiber cables. A plenum flame rating is required by thernNational Electrical Code.rnThe development of micro fiber cables required careful selectionrnof materials, construction, and process conditions to ensure goodrnoptical performance, thermal stability, mechanical robustness, andrnflame resistance. The use of newly developed bend-insensitivernmultimode fibers has played a key role in achieving a small,rnlightweight cable that is compatible with harsh placementrnconditions.rnA set of Qualification test data for a family of micro fiber cablesrnis presented, along with the results of application-driven testingrnwhich further demonstrates the advantages of bend-insensitivernmultimode fiber.
