Carbon, depending on its modifications such as diamond, graphite or carbon nanotubesanofibers, provides a good opportunity for the development of new metal matrix composites (MMCs) due to its interesting properties, including good electrical and thermal conductivity, high internal damping, good self-lubricating properties, and low density. According to the particular application, metal-carbon composites with their unique properties can be used in the areas of thermal management of electronic devices, tribology, and in equipment and mechanical engineering as a passive attenuator. Using graphite flakes powder metallurgical technologies can be used to manufacture composites with reinforcement contents up to 80vol.-%. Beside copper also other matrices were used, like tungsten, aluminium and iron. The thermo-physical properties as well as damping properties will be displayed and discussed in dependence from the manufacturing route and the composition. Additionally carbon nanotubes have been also used as reinforcement. Depending on the manufacturing technology the orientation of the tubes can be influenced and the resulting properties will be discussed as a function of microstructural parameters.
