BASF Polyurethanes has introduced a new isocyanate, to be sold under the trade name LUPRANATE? LP30 isocyanate (LP30). This isocyanate is a solvent free, modified diisocyanate with optimum storage conditions between 86? F and 104? F. LP30 is designed to replace pure MDI in applications where it is desirable to use a product that can be handled and stored as a liquid. LP30 is designed to benefit those customers who use frozen pure-MDI as a raw material, as well as those customers who use carbodiimide isocyanates in prepolymers. Large markets that could benefit from this LUPRANATE~R LP30 isocyanate are the polyurethane CASE market and polyurethane shoe sole market. Non-bulk customers will also appreciate this isocyanate due to the ease of handling and storage. LP30 offers many benefits to users of pure-MDI. The shelf life of LP30 is at least twice that of frozen pure-MDI at their respective optimum storage temperatures and LP30 requires less energy to maintain the temperature. The physical properties of elastomers made with LP30 typically exceed the properties of elastomers made with pure 4,4'-MDI products. LUPRANATE~R LP30 isocyanate also offers competitive advantages over carbodiimide-modified isocyanates by reducing raw material consumption while maintaining shelf stability. The storage properties and handling characteristics of LP30 will be described. In addition, elastomers were produced from LP30 (LUPRANATE~R LP30), polyether diols (1250 and 2500 MW), and butane diol. For comparison, elastomers were also made from pure 4,4'-MDI (LUPRANATE~R M) and carbodiimide modified MDI (LUPRANATE~R MM 103). The physical properties of each material are compared and discussed. Selected 2500 MW elastomers will be analyzed by DMTA.
