Building 340, located in US Army Garrison Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), MD, is a former refueling facility contaminated by releases from gasoline, diesel, and kerosene USTs. In situ air sparging and soil vapor extraction were implemented to remediate the site, and after 18 months of operation, an estimated 63,000 ibs. of TPH in soil and total BTEX in groundwater were achieved, and maximum MTBE concentrations were reduced form 7,010 ppb to 1,800 ppb. However, dissolved benzene concentrations exceeding the clean-up goal of 100 ppb persisted in one monitoring well, an MTBE concentrations exceeding the guidance level of 50 ppb suggested by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) were present in eight monitoring wells.
