Human intelligence has been modeled in two ways: modeling based onncentral symbolic processing, and modeling based on distributednsubsymbolic processing. This paper points out the limitations of thesentwo approaches, and proposes a hybrid cognitive model of centralnsymbolic processing on the conscious level, and distributed subsymbolicnprocessing on the unconscious level (C/U model). The advantages of thenC/U model are clarified by explaining various functions realized by thenmodel: multistage knowledge retrieval, recognition and inference withnsituated knowledge, inductive learning, and creative inference. Thosenfunctions are realized by utilizing the close interaction between thentwo levels. Finally, this paper describes an implementation method thatnutilizes the characteristics of a parallel logic programming language,nand also describes a knowledge acquisition system necessary for buildingnpractical hybrid systems
