Design, Installation, and Operating Experience with Extension Panel Burner-Lance Furniture at Nucor Steel - Auburn

Nucor Steel - Auburn has upgraded its original 30-year old runner tap electric arc furnace to a more modern EBT design during October 2006. Due to a desirable significant increase in the upper shell diameter we needed to convert from sidewall mounted burner-lance receivers to extension panel receivers in order to maintain proper lance impingement location without major refractory interference. This paper will make comparison between these two cast-copper water cooled furniture configurations in order to illustrate important design and installation considerations and it will also include a comparative review of operating experiences of the new system versus the original.
