Obituary H. John Caulfield

On Febr. 3, 2012, a very sad message came: John Caulfield, one of pioneers, passionate enthusiasts and popularizers of holography and optical information processing, passed away. We got personally acquainted some 30 years ago on, as far as I remember, a conference on holography in Varna, Bulgaria. At that time I was working in USSR Academy of Sciences and I was a so called "nevyezdnoy", which meant, in Russian, a person not allowed to travel outside the Soviet bloc. I was therefore prevented from participating in conferences and meetings in Western countries and for me meeting and getting acquainted with John was a breath of fresh air and freedom. Then we met whenever John attended conferences in the former Soviet Union or visited the USSR on other occasions. These meetings were always tremendous support, encouragement and stimulation for me.
