ENERGY SECURITY AND CO_2 IMPLICATIONS OF REGIONAL ENERGY RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT AND TRADE IN THE GREATER MEKONG SUBREGION COUNTRIES

In this paper, the effects of trans-boundary energy trade within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) is analyzed on economy wide, energy resource mix, power capacity mix, energy system cost and the environment i.e. CO_2 and local emissions as well as the electricity generation capacity mix in the case of the GMS countries during 2000 – 2035. A MARKAL based integrated energy system model of the subregion including Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam is developed to assess the effects of regional energy resource development and trade for meeting the energy demand of these countries. Additionally, five separate national level MARKAL based energy system models of the five countries are formulated to evaluate the benefits of regional transboundary energy resource development under three cases i.e., restricted energy trade case, no energy trade case and unrestricted energy trade case.
