In this paper a methodology for the evaluation of the parameters set characterising an image processing system for surveillance applications is presented.rnThe aim of the proposed system is to provide the remote operator with a description of the surveyed scene so allowing him to understand when alarm situations should be detected. The system is based on a colour TV camera which acquires video data and transmits the information to an image processing unit that is in charge to extract an high level characterisation of the environment (e.g., 3D localisation of people in the scene) and to provide such information to the remote control centre.rnThe paper is focused on the evaluation of the changes in the behaviour (in terms of capability of the 3D people localisation) of the surveillance system when the values of its parameters are modified: results of this analysis and performances obtained in the surveillance of a metro station are presented.
