THE STRUCTURAL DESIGN AND THE FABRIC ROOF OF THE FUDANUNIVERSITY SPORTS HALL IN SHANGHAI

The Fudan University Sports Hall in Shanghai, which is one of the project preparing the 100th anniversary forrnsetting up the Fudan Univ., came into the spotlight with huge interest to Shanghai. It has completed in 2006 sincernthe International competition began in 2002.rnWe paid attention to the word of ‘Fudan’ during the design process. The word of ‘Fudan’ has the meanings suchrnas ‘It doesn’t give up any efforts’, ‘The sun is rising and shining every day’, ‘The bright, brilliant and shinyrnmorning repeats itself’, ‘When the night is gone and the morning is coming, everything begins again.’rnTherefore we decided to add a new sun to Fudan University. We intended to light up another century. Wernexpressed the image of sun rising above the podium with a big steel arch frame. The podium is constituted for anrnarena, game operating or supporting facilities and space for student’s integral activities.rnThe roof structure adopted tension membrane-structure, that uses ‘PTFE’ to be easy to attract sun-light, hungrnwith cables and steel pipe truss structure which is considered for the functionality and the green environment,rnThe stand used by pre-cast structure ensured accurate workability in the site as well as induce to abbreviaternconstruction-term.rnThis gymnasium is an international-level sports complex constructed by the international standard and securesrnthe 3D and independent traffic line as well as the spaces including convenient facilities for players, spectatorsrnand VIP, and media rooms considering the disabled. The area was constructed to satisfy with the multi functionalrndemands for game, training, meeting and performance. Each room is planned as a multi-functional room so thatrnit can be used as a space for player’s training, student’s lecture and student’s activity in normal times in order tornpursue the multi-purpose space usage.
