STUDY UPON BLASTS RESISTANCE OF RC STRUCTURES

Many structural collapses of important buildings conceived in various structural solutions, functionalities andrnheight regimes were registered in the last fifty years. Some of them had a local character, while other spreadrnprogressive to the scale of the full structure or large parts of it. Even if blast incidents are relatively few withinrnthe entire range of causes that damage buildings, the number of victims is significant and the financial lossesrnvery important. Therefore, the paper presents a study made upon the resistance and prevention of progressivernstructural collapse of RC structures subjected to explosions, based on two complementary notions: structuralrnredundancy and robustness. After a brief introduction, the study presents the basics of blasts action,rncharacterized by many hazards. In the light of performance-based design in respect with the conception ofrnearthquake resistant structures, the paper presents forward the main requirements and their impact upon blastrnresistance. Common structural solutions are analyzed in the next section, followed by a case study consideringrnthe missing member scenarios for an earthquake resistant structure and parallel comments about blast andrnearthquake resistance design. The paper ends with conclusions about the necessary work to be done forward inrnrespect with progressive collapse prevention of public buildings.
