One of the most important matters in keeping membrane structures in healthy condition is to maintain thernproper tension distribution over the membrane. However, it is not easy to know the real stress level in thernmembrane quantitatively after completion of the structures. Fluttering by strong wind or ponding causedrnby rain water may cause the severe damage of membrane structure itself, therefore, it is very importantrnto know magnitude of existing stress in constructed membrane structures for their maintenance andrnmanagement. A new method is proposed by authors to measure membrane stresses in two di?erentrndirections separately, where instead of measuring the membrane stresses directly, the natural frequenciesrnof the membrane within fixed rectangular region resonated by sweep external excitation induced by soundrnis utilized. The accuracy of the measurement has to be achieved by proper consideration of added massrne?ect of the surrounding air. In this paper, the experimental results which are obtained through thernusage of the white noise as the external excitation are presented. It is clearly shown that the whiternnoise excitation is quite e?ective to catch the resonance frequency of the membrane and suitable for thernmeasurement equipment of membrane stress.
