The Guangzhou New Baiyun International Airport was the biggest area HSS in China and its practice enrichedrngreatly the domestic HSS experience. The passenger terminal building is the biggest civil engineering project inrnthe karst areas of China at present. The 350,000 m2 floor structure system of terminal is comprised of thernpost-tensioned bonded pre-stressed concrete frame with 18m×18m span. The roof structure covers an area ofrn165,000m2 and consumes steel of 21,000 metric tons. The tri-tubular battered columns with varying heightsrnfrom 16-37m and the purlinless box-shape steel deck with spans from 12~14m are both firstly applied in China.rnVarious types of joints and supports are used in HSS truss.rnGuangzhou New Baiyun International Airport is one of the three backbone airports in China mainland.rnThe phase one terminal building covers 350,000 m2. It is suitable for annual transport capability of 25,000,000rnperson-times. The airport is located in Huadu, a new developing district lying in the north of Guangzhou cityrnwhere the land price was relatively low. The construction of the airport has led prosperity to the local economyrnand at the same time left more sustainable development space for the airport itself. URS Greiner, an Americanrncompany who won the bid for the airport design, completed the conceptual design and the preliminary design ofrnterminal building. The Architectural Design & Research Institute of Guangdong Province completed the designrndevelopment and construction documents. The terminal building construction began in August 2000 and openedrnto use on 5 August 2004. The cost of the terminal building is about 4.1 billion Yuan (RMB).
