Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) has been increasingly used in the last 25 years for the non-destructive and cost-effective imaging and mapping of buried culture heritage.The objective of this work is the enhancement of resolution in imaging and characterization of culture heritage through the application of attribute analysis to the interpretation of GPR data.The method was originally developed to improve the quality and efficiency of 3-D seismic reflection data interpretation in hydrocarbon exploration and reservoir characterization.In our study we developed and tested a multi-attribute approach,including instantaneous,section and volume attributes,to obtain detailed 2-D and 3-D subsurface models.We applied the method to image a buried wall buried at the ancient Nan-zhao city-site in Yunnan Province,SW China; and part of the river harbor area of the Aquileia Archaeological Park,NE Italy,dating back to the Roman imperial period.The results show that attribute analysis provides resolution enhancement and improved imaging of subsurface targets that can greatly help archaeological excavation planning and optimization.
